Medical Educational Service Opportunities
When:
Summer 2010
Description: Before designing the Medical Education Service Opportunities (MESO) logo, I carefully researched the caduceus and the rod of Aesculapius, as well as other common symbols associated with medicine. The caduceus is an insignia used by the medical profession and is characterized by two opposing serpents coiled around the winged-staff of Hermes. Similar in form is the rod of Asclepius, which is characterized by only one serpent encircling a cypress branch. Although the two symbols seem similar in appearance, they conceal drastically different messages. The caduceus is the rod of Hermes, who happens to be the Greek god that leads the dead to the underworld. Furthermore, Hermes is also associated with wealth and commerce, but also happens to be the patron of thieves. Asclepius, on the other hand, was a healer, the Greek god of medicine and the son of Apollo, the god of health. Interestingly, according to Walter Friedlander's The Golden Wand of Medicine: A History of the Caduceus Symbol in Medicine, 62% of healthcare professionals used the rod of Asclepius, while 76% of commercial healthcare organizations used the caduceus.

In the MESO logo, I chose to incorporate the serpent from the rod of Asclepius due to its divine knowledge to heal. The serpent is coiled around a stylized Iris as that flower represents hope and wisdom. I combined the two symbols into a single entity to form the letter "S," which also represents the Services found in Medical Education Service Opportunities. It is MESO's mission to seek local and international hands-on clinical experience and research opportunities as well as to collect medicine and dental supplies for free health clinics in Central America. MESO is a non-profit, student run organization at the University of Michigan with over 200 active members.

Michigan Student Assembly
When:
Winter 2010
Description: The Michigan Student Assembly is the central student government at the University of Michigan. With many commissions and representation from each school and college, MSA represents the student voice at the University to the administration and the world. MSA logo’s form is based on one of the six faces of Endover, a well-known, 15-foot sculpture found on the University of Michigan’s campus. Although seemingly massive and immovable, the Cube actually rotates on its axis, given a gentle push.

Course
: Structure and Expressiveness in Visual Communication
When
: Fall 2009
Description: The objective of the assignment was to design the identity, structure, typography, and cover graphics to a magazine. I proceeded by devising a grid for all of the covers. My primary goal was to build a foundation idea that had consistency but flexibility. I knew that many different grids could work, but chose to develop a hybrid of between a modular and hierarchical grid. While investigating my concept, I had to be careful not to take too much latitude with too many elements because I didn’t want to lose the balance between consistency and creativity since the project consisted of a format for multiple uses. The identity of my project roots from the form of the human eye and is evident in the outer structure of the covers. Each cover’s color scheme is pulled from colors existing in the featured image.

When
: Fall 2008
Assignment: Develop a knowledge base in something you find interesting and important that falls within the scope of the class. Create some work that “reports on / responds to” your research. The work must be stand alone.
Solution
: I chose to research pop culture fashion trends because the clothing we wear today defines who we are; what we wear gives us a sense of identity. I demonstrated my research through creating my own pitch for a new clothing company. My goal was to offer an assortment of sardonic apparel, which made satirical statements through hip and kitschy designs.
